Deadwood Trailer Analysis

The general colour design of the sets is murky and washed out. There aren't many bright colours in the shots which creates a gritty tone, and shows the dark nature of the town. The set design and props are limited in senses, such as the lack of proper roads(shown here) shows the town is technologically limited or maybe poor. It helps to make the show's world feel accurate to the time period of the late 19th century. The lighting of the show seems to be low-key, which makes the show seem realistic and helps to make the show seem like it's accurate to the time period. A lot of the lighting is natural or from gas lighting. The costumes chosen and their portrayal tell what a character is like without much context. For example the character here is wearing a suit, and seems well spoken which tells me that he is rich and well educated, likely having a position of power. Characters wear things like cowboy hats, and suits from the time period to be accurate.
