Calamity Films created a film called 'Pride' in 2014. However,since they are a small,independent company they needed to outsource distribution of the film to global conglomerates to be successful.
In the US 'Pride's distributors were CBS films and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. CBS Films helped to distribute the film's theatrical release,while Sony Pictures distributed the physical,home releases as DVD and Blu-Ray. At the time Sony Pictures had a deal with CBS where they were responsible for the home releases of all of CBS' films.
In the UK Pathe, 20th Century Fox,BBC Films and BBC Two were the distributors. Pathe and 20th Century Fox have a joint venture where 20th Century Fox distribute home releases. I think Calamity Films went to distributors to cover the marketing side of the film. They mightn't have had the knowledge of marketing to target audiences so they would benefit by having a distributor do it for them. It's also beneficial since it means that the film would have a large name to back it up and bring it more attention.
