The products I've chosen are Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing:New Horizons which were both released on 20th March 2020. I chose these because they released at the same day but the genres and audiences of the games are polar opposites,so I thought it'd be interesting to look at their similarities in marketing.

The games have very similar advertising ideas despite the differences in the genres. Both make use of TV adverts and heavily use social media accounts to advertise them.

They used social media such as Twitter to create hype for the game. For example, both created Twitter posts to countdown until the release.

The countdown until the releases make it very clear that this is a new game coming out. They also used their Twitter accounts to show off new features or screenshots, which would also work to create hype and emphasise how these are new products.

The Doom account also used the fact that Animal Crossing released on the same day to it's advantage.

The tweet went around a lot online because people thought it was funny. This worked to help promote the game in a sense as it only spread news that Doom Eternal released on the same day as Animal Crossing.

I think both did a good job of highlighting that these games are new products. This was mostly done through social media as only so much can be done in TV trailers, but I think they generated hype well. Despite the differences of audience and genres the games have, the way they advertised was very similar. I think this shows that products under the same type will be advertised similarly.
