L01) 1.4. Repurpose this!

Repurposing is reusing already created work for use in another piece of work. There are lots of ways that work can be repurposed, for example:

  • Video footage into a film trailer.
  • Images being used in a different way than used in the original work.
  • Audio (music, sfx, dialogue, etc) being used in audio-visual work.
  • Layouts getting carried over.
  • Visualisations adjusted to fit the context.
  • Images turned or used for animation.
  • Video screenshots used to create an image.
  • Mood boards reused to inspire a new idea.
I have repurposed things in my own work. For example in my Unit 20 advertising when I created ads for Diet Coke, I reused the photos I took multiple times across the ads. The cans were the same across most, if not all, of the ads. When I made animated lip sync videos, I reused the mouths I drew for the first video again. By repurposing previous things, I saved time on creating newer work. The good thing is that there wasn't really a downside to it as everything fits well.

LO2) 2.1 Physical to Digital

Physical work must first be converted into a digital format so that its viewable online. This can be done through taking photos with a phone or digital camera, or by using a scanner on the work. Personally I've just taken a photo of my physical work on paper with my phone and then connected it to my computer, and dragged the image files over. You could also email the images or put them into online storage like OneDrive. If an image has been scanned then you can scan the work directly to a computer to upload the work from.

LO2) 2.1 File Formats

There are different file types to use and consider for uploading work. The biggest difference of file types is usually the quality and compression.

Images

PNG image file retains good quality and doesn't have to have a background, whereas a JPEG will have lower quality than a PNG but is more compressed so its file size is smaller. For displaying work online its better to use a PNG because you want the best possible quality to be seen. TIFF files are similar to PNGs but have the ability to store layers which may make them better for editing or photography purposes. I drew an image in Illustrator and then exported it as a JPEG and as a PNG for a point of comparison. The PNG is of higher quality and size when viewed than the JPEG, and also has no background while the JPEG does.

JPEG

GIFs are another image format but they have another purpose than most others. They are short animated images, and can loop infinitely. APNGs are an alternative, but since GIFs have been around longest they have the most support. They're good for displaying a very short animation and I've used them before when showing my work process.

Audio

WAV audio files have high quality and MP3 is lesser quality but is more compressed. However its better to use MP3 online when distributing as its much more standard and is easier to stream and distribute. You'd probably use a WAV file when editing audio however, as the quality makes it much better for accuracy.

Video

MP4 is the most common for its high quality and decent file size compared to others. AVI files are good but are also less compressed, and also less compatible with things like uploading online. MOV files also have good quality but are only usable with Apple software, which creates compatability issues. Since MP4 is the most standard, its likely better to just use that.
