LO1) 1.1 What is a personal media profile?

A personal media profile is a form of digital portfolio, but rather than just containing content it can also contain testimonials, blogs, or experiences relevant to the media sector.

A social media profile relates to a profile on websites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc which relates to personal and social content in this context.

A digital portfolio is an online showcase of work. It could be a showreel video or pieces of work in an image format.

Why do I need a personal media profile?

It allows for my work to be easily accessed and seen, and for my process of work to be detailed. Through explaining my work, its good for interviewers as they see and can judge the depth of knowledge and skill presented. Another benefit is that working digitallly allows for content to have the best quality, so images will be able to be their full size and show the whole range of colour easier than on something physical. It can be accessed at any time on any device which makes viewing this kind of portfolio very flexible for anyone.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Digital Portfolios

Strengths

  • Very easily accessible, available to see on any device at any time.
  • Work can be shown at its best quality.
  • Digital work can be laid out in an interesting and interactive way.
  • Allows for a wide range of media types to be used (video, audio, images, etc)
Weaknesses
  • May require knowledge about building and designing websites, especially if wanting to make more interesting and advanced layouts.
  • Must remember to upload all work, it can be easy to forget to take a picture of work you've already done.
  • Some work is best seen physically.

The examples I've looked at here present their work in different ways. Studio Feixen's website has lots of work on one page, which makes seeing their style quick. The presentation is quite simple but effective, and makes navigation very easy. Each post has a brief explanation and more work of that same style/purpose is shown off.

Malika Favre's website is similar, as it has lots of work visible at once. Here its all put into squares which makes it fit very well and each post has a transition which creates a good aesthetic for the site. This presentation helps to make the work look better

Lusion shows off their real time graphics through interacting with your mouse on the screen. Objects can move around the background with your movements or a light can follow the mouse, which is much better than just a video as you can experience the work. They show off their work and give some ideas on the process behind it.

RoAndCo have their work much less condensed on screen, and sometimes just have one large piece of work showcased. You click to the sides to go through more work which makes it feel quite interactive. There isn't really any information on the work however.
